Fulfilling all of these factors in a single photograph takes practice, but, as you become more familiar with a course, you'll learn where the best photo opportunities are and, often more importantly, when the time's right to snap a picture. Expedition Points are tallied from six evaluation factors, such as which direction the subject of your photo is facing and whether it's placed in the centre of the photograph. Research Levels, including many of the courses, are unlocked by reaching a specific amount of Expedition Points, which, in turn, are earned from your photo evaluations given at the end of each course run. Both the Research Levels and night-time courses help maintain a sense of discovery, which ensures returning to these courses, even as you progress further, is enjoyable. Sylveon, for example, is absent from Florio Nature Park during the day, but can be easily found once night falls. Some courses can also be explored during the night, which, again, leads you to finding a new selection of Pokémon. These determine which Pokémon appear and where, with certain Pokémon only showing up on specific Research Levels or behaving differently. New Pokémon Snap deepens this loop, preventing it from becoming too repetitive, by giving each course a number of Research Levels. New Pokémon Snap has a range of environments for you to explore. You'll find yourself revisiting courses to investigate what's occurring behind your pod or to capture the activities of a sole Pokémon. It's easy to miss a creature simply because you're facing the wrong direction or need to line up your shot in preparation for their appearance. Every location is filled with Pokémon roaming the land, skies or waters, making it near impossible to capture them all on camera in a single visit. Each one is explored rail-shooter style and, despite sounding restrictive, it grants you the freedom to focus on taking pictures or uncovering secrets, such as alternative routes.

Sadly, despite my preparation, I'm a second too late and Pikipek has already taken flight. I position my camera carefully and, when I round the corner, take a flurry of photographs. My current quest is to snap a picture of a Pikipek, the Pokémon equivalent of a woodpecker, drilling away at a tree. I've journeyed through the Founja Jungle so many times the location of the Pokémon have been embedded in my brain I know where the Beautifly flutter, the Arbok slither and where the Quagsire wallow in the swamp. New Pokémon Snap captures the strange joy of the original game without being derivative.
